But...True, I write sentences in acceptable grammar. But I am not trying to write poetry! If I were, I would have been happy to write this one-sentence Tender Button, called "A Petticoat":

A light white, a disgrace, an ink spot, a rosy charm.

That's it. I think it could be about coded love, sexuality, embarrassment, discovery. I love to play with what she is writing. I think that's the point... to notice the words and the rhythms and hear them in your head. But then here is part of a letter to Thornton Wilder (who had helped Stein with publishers):

"... now that you are in Chicago is the University Press pleased with our book and do they want to do the four in America [another book]. Alice says we must not frighten them I ask to hear so that I may take the ms. along for proofreading, Alice says we must not frighten them..." (2 April 1936)

Alice B. Toklas was worried that Gertrude Stein's writing would be too radical... and that the press would not want to take a chance on another book. In the end, Stein published a good deal of her own work, and after her death Toklas published even more. The desire to communicate? Very strong. It's what we each take away from the readings that matters. Maybe she's just not for you... but I warn you, she will take you by surprise some day if you give her a few more chances. She mea...You're being overly-friendly to Stein. She meant that clarity, in the sense of communicating ideas, was pointless. She proved that she meant this by always writing in a way that obscured communication, including the passage you quoted.

You write sentences that communicate meaning, which proves you don't really believe Stein.shagbarkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07759080646499030919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2035471609418333392.post-82264214630424130572011-05-17T12:50:33.086-07:002011-05-17T12:50:33.086-07:00Yay the SFMoma show on Gertrude Stein is opening s...Yay the SFMoma show on Gertrude Stein is opening soon: http://twitter.com/#!/SFMOMA
SO excited, are you going soon???Keighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09194024788920137698noreply@blogger.com
